What is Farrago?

farrago (noun): /fə-rä′gō, -rā′-/  a confused mixture; a medley; a hodgepodge.

Get ready for Farrago, a word trivia game that challenges your speed, vocabulary, and creative thinking. In this game, you're up against a trivia topic and the clock, with only 60 seconds to give eight answers for a topic using specific lettered dice. With 180 unique topics, every round brings a fresh mental puzzle.

The competition never rests in Farrago. If a team fails to find answers for every die before their time is up, a 30-second "steal" window opens up for everyone. Opposing teams scramble to shout valid answers and snatch those remaining dice for themselves.

The team with the highest score after four rounds wins!

Open up this quick to setup, easy to learn game that'll flex your mental muscles. If you enjoy classic word games like Scrabble, Boggle, Outburst, and more, this game is definitely for you!

How to Play

You can play Farrago solo, as a group (2-3 players), as individuals (2-4 players) or on teams (up to 4 teams). To play a turn in Farrago, you:
1. Roll the Dice: The active team chooses a scribe (player to write their answers) and rolls eight lettered dice and one numbered die.

2. Determine the Topic: An opposing team reads the topic matching the number rolled and starts the 60-second timer.

3. Call Out Answers: The active team calls out answers for the topic that start with one of the rolled letters, which their scribe writes down. Answers with more unique dice letters in them get bonus points.

4. Steal Unused Dice: If time expires and dice remain, other teams have 30 seconds to "steal" them by being the first to call out a valid answer.

5. Score the Turn: Teams spellcheck their answers and calculate points based on how many unique dice letters were used in each word.

The turn then moves to the next team or player until everyone has completed a topic to finish the round. A normal game is four rounds.

Scoring

After both timers have ended, teams should correct their spelling before scoring.

  • Base Points: Every acceptable answer for a die is worth 1 point (see Acceptable Answers).
  • Bonus Points: You earn extra points if your answer contains multiple unique letters from rolled dice:
    1 letter = 1 pt
    2 letters = 2 pts
    3 letters = 3 pts
    4 letters = 5 pts
    5+ letters = 8 pts
  • Tracking Points: To making scoring easier, circle or underline the letters in your word that match the dice letters. Each unique die is only counted once per word.
  • Stolen Dice Impact: If another team steals a die, you cannot use that letter to gain bonus points in your own words. However, if a letter was not used by anyone, all teams can use it for bonus points within their words.

Teams assign scribes and Team 1 shakes the dice, pours them out, and gets the following:
                  D   R   S   A   T   U   E   O, and the number 4.

Team 2 takes a topic card and reads the topic marked with 4 on the card - which is "Countries" - and starts the 60s timer. Team 1 comes up with the following answers:
      SPAIN
      RWANDA
      ESTONIA
      DENMARK
      THAILAND

The timer runs out, leaving O, A, and U for Team 2 to try and steal. Team 1 starts the 30s timer. Team 2 comes up with:
      OMAN
      UGANDA

After the 30s timer runs out, both teams check their spelling and score their answers. The A was unused by either team, so can be scored by both. Team 1 scores:
      SPAIN: 2 points
      RWANDA: 3 points
      ESTONIA: 5 points
      DENMARK: 3 points
      THAILAND: 3 points
... for a total of 16 points.
NOTE: they don’t get points for O’s or U’s because Team 2 stole those dice.

Team 2 scores:
      OMAN: 2 points
      UGANDA: 2 points
... for a total of 4 points.
NOTE: they don’t get points for the D in “Uganda” because Team 1 had an answer for that die.

Now it’s Team 2's turn for their topic and Team 1's chance to steal.

Gameplay Options

Solo/Group Play (1-3 Players)

You only use the 60-second timer, and any unused dice do not count for points. For a harder challenge, you can subtract 1 point for every unused die.

Individual Play (2-4 Players)

Just like Team Play, but each player is also their own scribe. The player must call out their answers when writing them down. The other players get a chance to steal dice, with the first player to call out a valid answer getting that die.

Party Play

For large groups, use a whiteboard and an erasable marker to make it easier for everyone to see the rolled letters. Roll the dice and write all the letters on the board, one per line. The scribe of the current team will write their team's answers using each letter on the board. Place a slash through any stolen dice letters as they are stolen. Each team should write down their stolen dice and answers on a separate piece of paper for scoring.

Simultaneous Play (2-4 Players)

You only use the 30-second timer. Answers are called out simultaneously by all players, and the player who calls out the answer takes the die and writes down their answer. Any unused dice can be scored by all players for bonus points.

I've played Farrago several times. It manages to be both fun and challenging and good for individual or team play. I'm looking forward to playing again.
